UK: Entry Now Requires ETA

ree

Anyone wishing to travel to the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) will require a valid passport and an additional Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This is a security clearance that must be applied for online.

As of April 2, 2025, nationals of European countries must register online in advance – either via a mobile app or through an online portal. An ETA is required for each individual traveler, including accompanying children, regardless of the means of transport (e.g., airplane, ferry, train).

The ETA is valid for two years and can be used for multiple entries. Since processing can take up to 72 hours, it is recommended to apply for the ETA at least three days before departure.

Required Documents for the ETA Application

  • A valid passport that will be used upon entry

  • A photo of the passport (the page with personal information, clearly legible)

  • A photo of the traveler

  • A credit card (VISA, Mastercard, American Express), or Apple Pay / Google Pay

During the application, personal information must be entered, and questions about the trip must be answered.

Fees: The processing fee for the ETA application is approximately € 20 (GBP 16). Payment is accepted only via credit card (VISA, Mastercard, American Express), Google Pay, or Apple Pay.

What if the Application is Denied?

No appeal can be lodged against a denied ETA application. In case of rejection, affected travelers must apply for a traditional visa at the British embassy and wait for approval before traveling to the United Kingdom.

Who Is Exempt from the ETA?

Only air passengers transiting through the UK without leaving the airport’s transit area are exempt from the ETA requirement. However, such airside transit is only available at London Heathrow and Manchester airports.

Travelers should check with their airline well in advance whether their layover qualifies as an airside transit (no border control involved). Note that at London Heathrow, passengers may be required to exit the transit area when switching terminals.
